IIHS Crash Test ''Best Pick''
Maxima's performance in the high speed 40-mph frontal offset crash test into a deformable barrier earned it the highest rating of "Best Pick" from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
Curtain/Side Air Bag System
Since they're built into the front seats - not the door panels - Maxima's side-impact supplemental air bags move with you when you adjust the seat to help protect your head and chest areas in certain side impacts. And above you, roof-mounted curtain side-impact supplemental air bags help protect front and rear passengers from injuries. View
Inflated air bags shown on this page are for illustration purposes only. Actual air bags deflate after deployment. Please keep in mind that air bags are a supplemental restraint system and must always be used in conjunction with a seat belt. A rear-facing child restraint must never be placed in the front-passenger's seat. All children 12 and under should ride in the rear seat properly secured in child restraints, booster seats, or seat belts, according to their size. Please see your owner's manual for more details.
Dual-stage Front Air Bags
Maxima's standard dual-stage supplemental front air bags adjust their inflation levels depending on the severity of the impact. In a less severe crash, for example, the front air bags are designed to inflate with less force. Using seat belt buckle sensors, the air bags can also detect belt usage and deploy accordingly.

Active Head Restraints
Active head restraints actually move forward (toward your head) when you're rear-ended, helping to reduce the chances of whiplash injuries for you and your front-seat passenger.
Pretensioners/Load Limiters
Always, always wear your seat belt. As good as they are, air bags are not a replacement for a seat belt. Inside the Maxima, the front seat belts utilize pretensioners, which tighten the belt when the front air bags deploy. And load limiters — another feature built into the front seat belts — know enough to "give" a little if your body puts too much force on the belt.
Zone Body Construction
Structural elements are built right into every 2004 Maxima to help protect the passenger zone in the event of an impact. These include: pipe-style steel side-door guard beams; front and rear crumple zones; hood buckling creases; and energy-absorbing steering column
Child Safety
Child-safety rear door locks help prevent children from accidentally opening the rear doors. The LATCH System (Lower Anchors and Tether for CHildren) lets you secure a LATCH-compatible child restraint without using the seat belts.
Snug Kids — the Nissan Child Safety Seat Fit Guide — is the latest child safety program developed by Nissan which provides parents with specific information to properly fit an infant, child or booster seat for their 2000-2004 Nissan or Infiniti vehicle. The Snug Kids Guide was developed to help improve child safety by making sure the right child seat is chosen and providing tips on proper installation. Vehicle Security System
Make sure your new Maxima stays right where you left it. The Vehicle Security System flashes the headlights and sounds the horn if there's any attempt to open the doors or hood without a key, or remove key cylinders. You can also push the panic button on the keyfob to sound the alarm for 30 seconds.
Vehicle Immobilizer System
The Nissan Vehicle Immobilizer System makes it almost impossible for anyone to steal your car without your actual key. A microchip inside the key sends a signal telling the engine to start. Without the key, the chip, and the signal, your Maxima won't start.
